February 24, 2014 – Pius wins state in academic decathlon, headed to Hawaii
Nine students from Pius X High School showed their knowledge of World War I and won the Nebraska Academic Decathlon Feb. 21 to 22, securing themselves a trip to nationals in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The Pius X Team unseated Creighton Prep, last year’s champions, at the weekend competition held at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Pius is the only Lincoln school that advanced from the regional competition in January to the finals of the 10-event scholastic competition. Northeast High School competed in regionals but did not advance to state.
Last year Pius was runner up to Creighton Prep.

Prep won the annual state competition for the seventh time in the past decade, topping Lincoln Pius X and Omaha Burke. Prep also won the Super Quiz, a lightning round event in which participants have seven seconds to answer each of 10 questions.
In the small school category, Nebraska City Lourdes won for the sixth straight year.
February 11, 2012 – Cozad, Loup City students to compete in Nebraska Academic Decathlon
Students from Cozad and Loup City will be competing in the Nebraska Academic Decathlon next weekend.
Academic Decathlon was created to provide opportunities for students to experience the challenges of rigorous team and individual academic competition. Each student competes in 10 events: economics, essay, art, interview, language and literature, math, music, social science, speech and the super quiz, which is a topic that changes every year.
The decathlon begins at 2:15 p.m. Saturday at the Skutt Student Center Ballroom in Omaha.
The top three teams from large and small school divisions earn scholarships for higher education. The Nebraska state champions will compete in the national finals April 25-28 in Albuquerque, N.M.
January 22, 2012 – Academic Decathlon Helps Students In All Areas Of Life
A regional competition focuses on mental fortitude for area students to move to the next level.
Believe it or not, this is an actual competition. High School students from around the area wracked their brains Saturday on a math test during the Nebraska Academic Decathlon.
The program helps students engage their minds to help them succeed in college and in life.
“I’m always amazed at what the kids come up with, what they can do, what they can succeed at, how, for example, I would have teachers come in and observe the class and they couldn’t tell the sophomores from the seniors any more in discussion level.” said Kearney decathlon coach Christine Hunnicutt. “That for me as a teacher is so motivational it’s an incredible feeling to see unfold before your eyes.”
“This is a smaller and smaller world every year,” said program volunteer Executive Director John Anstey. “And if these kids aren’t able to develop an understanding of these various different countries, ideas and cultures, they’re going to be left in the dust. We don’t want our students in Nebraska left in the dust.”
Students also tested in subjects including art, literature, and history. Winners of the regional will advance to state competition in February.
